Fixes To 3 Common Plumbing Problems

Posted on

Homeowners will eventually run into their fair share of plumbing related problems in their home. Thankfully, some of these problems can be fixed on your own without the need of professional help. Here are 3 plumbing problems that have a simple solution.

Clogged Toilets

Have you already tried using your plunger to unclog your toilet, but have not had any luck? Try using the plunger again with a better understanding of how it works. You will want to trap water in the head of the plunger so that you can force the water down the drain like a powerful jet of water. This is what breaks up the clog. Without water in the plunger you won't have much luck at clearing away the clog. You may need to put water into the toilet bowl to create the suction you need to use the plunger.

An alternate technique is to us soap and hot water. Fill the toilet bowl with a generous amount of liquid soap, then add 1 gallon of hot water to the toilet bowl. Let the mixture work its magic for a couple minutes, since it should help break up toilet paper within the pipe. Try using the plunger again to see if it unclogs the toilet.

Clogged Shower Drains

The most likely cause of a clog within your shower is going to be due to hair. You can try to remove the hair using a coat hanger that has the metal at the end bent into a hook. Stick the metal hanger into your drain, move it around, and pull it out in hopes of removing the hair.

Another method involves using a small sewer snake that has a Velcro pad on the end. You will be surprised at how much hair sticks to the Velcro, since all you do is force the snake into the drain while spinning the snake in a circle. Remove the snake, rip off the hair, and repeat. This technique will get a clogged drain flowing again very fast.

Noisy Water Heaters

Does it sound like something is banging from inside your hot water heater? This is due to sediments that has collected over the years from your cold water line. This problem can be fixed by draining all of the water from the tank, which will carry the sediment out of the tank with the water.
